The seniors had a famous win over Cahir tonight at Ardfinnan in the fourth round of the South Championship. Conditions were perfect and we had almost a full squad available to pick from, so confidence was high.
We were unusually slow to start and found ourselves 4 points to no score down after 15 mins. Keith Madigan then pulled off two match saving saves to deny Cahir what
looked like certain goals. This spurred us out of our lethargy and our forward play improved but we still went in 6 points to 2 down at the break. Despite an even share of possession, we had not matched the Cahir work rate in the first half and couldn't argue with the scoreline. However, we knew there was plenty of room for improvement and were determined to give it everything in the second half.
We kicked the first two scores of the second half but Cahir responded with a brace of their own to maintain their 4 point advantage. Cahir seemed happy to protect their lead and set up a defensive screen but this handed the initiative to our boys. We kicked 4 unanswered points to level the match going into the final minute. A Cahir attack was kicked wide and we had one final kick out to try and set up the winning score. The ball was won cleanly and played to Dean Kelleher. He took on his man and was fouled out near the touchline about 25 mts from the end line. Martin Doyle handed the ball to Johnny Cagney and told him it was the last kick of the game. Johnny showed nerves of steel to kick the winning score and we had recorded our first ever win over Cahir in the senior championship!
This was an excellent second half performance by all of the players and we dug really deep to get the win needed to keep us in the championship. The forward line will take a lot of confidence from the game and this gives us a platform to build on. We are now in a playoff with Cahir and Ardfinnan (two teams to go through). Well done all concerned and a big thank you to the supporters.
